Millers Quay – Future Marina? Why not?!

Why don’t we not have our own Marina, which would echo Liverpool’s successful yacht marina near Brunswick?

This was a question that came from the group in Backin’ Birkenhead’s  Jane Walk (6th August 2026) thinking about about the potential to develop a marina in the existing dock close to Millers Quay, the new housing development at Wirral Waters.

Looking back from Millers Quay towards East Float Quay, the sheer scale of the restored warehouses against the dock, and the key icons of this landscape, is breathtaking.

Could we have “Cannes on the Mersey” – a playful, but telling shorthand, for the ambition and possibility Millers Quay itself promotes in artist sketches from Peel Waters— bold in scale, yet still in keeping with the surreal character which sets a strong benchmark for future development.

Already the housing is variable & colourful from the smaller-scale Urban Splash homes nearby to the award winning apartment blocks. There is a supermarket, and nearby small business units available for possible chandlers, yacht sail repairs,  and other related local services.

However, we have been told we would need to persuade Peel Docks to allow this use in the existing ship operating dock.

Do you think Is this a good idea for Birkenhead? Do you have a more practical local use for this impressive waterside area?

Again, we found ourselves discussing which apartment block we would each prefer, or whether offered a more appealing way to live in the area. My own preference, I decided, is the yellow one. [Graham Marshall, June 6, 2026]
