Making People Relevant – Our stewardship of our places

Pride in People – Role of Local Stewardship

Too often ‘Regeneration Projects’ focus on new construction  and do not include enough funding for regular maintenance.

This issue was raised at Jane Walk (30 May 2026) and highlighted an important thread of activism for Backin’ Birkenhead, closely aligned with the stewardship ambitions within our Place Plan.

We asked; Could a new form of local maintenance and landscape management emerge here?

Do we have skills needed to care for a contemporary public realm?

Could local stewardship be linked to the college, thus connecting local people with our world-class historic park (Birkenhead Park).

Can we shape Birkenhead through community participation and training?

As Graham Marshall asked[June 6, 2026] “Rather than treating maintenance as a hidden cost, could stewardship itself become part of Birkenhead’s social and economic renewal?”

What is your view? What do you think are the barriers to local stewardship?
