Central Birkenhead’s unique urban fabric provides the foundation for this transformation, supported by its strategic location, natural assets, and transport links. Woven together, these efforts will create a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable future, anchored in a shared sense of place and purpose.
Building a caring town where everyone has a role in looking after community facilities, public spaces, and each other. Tackling loneliness, improving safety, and creating inter-generational connections.
Conserving the Historic Townscape
Hamilton Square is one of the UK’s most significant heritage assets, boasting the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings outside London. A draft Conservation Area Regeneration Plan has been prepared for the area, which includes extending its boundaries to incorporate a fuller historic continuity. The Plan positions heritage as supporting growth and quality of life. It includes blending heritage with bold town centre renewal including improving shopfronts, restoring upper-floor residential use and rethinking parking and the use of the public places and spaces.
