Promoting Birkenhead’s Architectural Heritage
Discovering Birkenhead’s architectural gems is inspirational. That is why we held a community-lead Jane Walk (30 May 2026).
Walking along industrial roads, much of the earlier sense of urban quality feels lost. Then, suddenly, we encountered the redundant, yet beautifully detailed, Art Deco entrance to the Queensway Tunnel beneath the Mersey.
How to make the most of this, almost forgotten, unique Birkenhead feature lead to lots of ideas. Do you have any ideas to add?
Even more surprising was the Room 101 Antiques Emporium in Rendel Street, behind us; an unexpected pocket of character and activity in a landscape seemingly designed only for driving through rather than walking in.
One of Backin’ Birkenhead’s directors (Graham Marshall) said “Experiencing this area on foot reveals something quite different. Beneath the traffic engineering and industrial scale, there remains an underlying urban beauty and promise. “
